World Recipe: Potato Hash Browns

Hash Browns are delicious potato croquettes or pancakes that are mixed with wheat flour, egg, spices, and then fried until they have a golden and crispy exterior. This preparation is very versatile and can be made in various ways, but the most traditional method involves using grated potato, which gives them a unique texture and irresistible flavor.

Ingredients:

  • 3 large potatoes
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1 egg

Preparation:

  1. Peel the potatoes with a peeler and wash them under the tap. Grate them using a grater, using the coarsest part to obtain thin strips of potato, similar to julienne. It’s important not to grate them too finely to avoid them turning into a puree.
  2. Drain the grated potatoes very well to remove all excess water. Place them in a colander, press with your hands, and then dry with a clean cloth. This step is crucial to achieve crispy Hash Browns.
  3. Season the grated potatoes with salt and pepper to taste and mix well. If desired, you can add a beaten egg to help the patties bind better, but this is optional and not part of the original recipe.
  4. Heat a little oil in a non-stick frying pan. Once hot, form the patties with your hands or using a spoon to shape them. It’s important that the patties have a uniform thickness so that they cook evenly.
  5. Fry the patties until golden and crispy on both sides, turning them carefully to ensure even cooking. The heat should be at medium temperature to ensure the potatoes cook properly.
  6. Drain the Hash Browns on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  7. Serve hot as a side dish for an English breakfast or as part of a delicious brunch.
