09 Jul The First “Organized Trip” Was Invented by a Religious Pastor
Thomas Cook, considered the father of modern tourism, was an English pastor who, in 1841, organized a train trip to take 500 people to an anti-alcohol congress in Leicester. Interestingly, he did it as part of his religious crusade, not for tourism purposes. The trip included transport, food, and entertainment—it was the first travel package in history.
From there, he began organizing trips for more people and founded the agency Thomas Cook & Son, which revolutionized global tourism. What started as a moral and religious activity turned into a global business model. Ironically, many agencies following that model today sell all-inclusive cruise and party packages. It all began with a sober journey to preach temperance.
