World Recipe: Frybread

World Recipe: Frybread

Frybread is a traditional fried bread from the Navajo communities in the U.S. It emerged as a form of resilience when Native peoples had to adapt to government-issued ingredients during forced relocations.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1 tsp of baking powder
  • 3/4 cup of warm water
  • Oil for frying

Preparation

  • In a bowl, mix the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  • Slowly add the water until a soft dough forms. Let it rest for 30 minutes.
  • Divide into portions, roll into thin circles, and fry in hot oil until puffed and golden.

It can be served sweet with honey or savory with meat and vegetables.
