Wli Waterfalls, also known as Agumatsa Falls, is a captivating and renowned tourist attraction situated near the village of Wli, not far from the Togo border. Most tourists opt for the easily accessible lower falls, offering a predominantly flat trail with breathtaking surroundings. The scenery becomes even more spectacular due to the presence of thousands of fruit bats nesting high up on the nearby cliffs. However, the upper falls, equally impressive but more secluded, offers a unique adventure for those with the stamina to tackle a challenging hike. Both falls feature inviting pools at their bases, perfect for those willing to take a refreshing dip.

Wli Waterfalls proudly stands as the highest waterfall in West Africa, locally known as Agumatsa Falls, which translates to “Allow Me to Flow.” Nestled within the Hohoe municipality of the Volta Region, a land steeped in Ewe culture, it is approximately 280 kilometers from the capital, Accra. The trail takes you through the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary, home to over 200 bird species and 400 butterfly species.

Things to Do:

Embark on an enjoyable hike with a knowledgeable tour guide to reach the lower falls. The trail is mostly flat, with eight river crossings via bridges. Duration: 1.5 hours. Difficulty: 1.

For a more challenging adventure, deviate from the main path under your guide’s guidance to ascend steep and demanding trails leading to the upper falls. Sturdy footwear is recommended. Duration: 4 hours. Difficulty: 3.

Explore the shrine of lesser gods, believed to have been brought to the village by ancestors from Togo. Your guide will provide insights into the history and other points of interest in the village. Duration: 1 hour. Difficulty: 1.

Visit the village ostrich farm, a recent initiative in collaboration with an NGO aimed at creating sustainable employment opportunities through the sale of eggs. Your guide will introduce you to the 25 ostriches on the farm and explain its operations. Duration: 1 hour. Difficulty: 1.

When to Visit:

Wli Waterfalls welcomes visitors year-round. The falls are most awe-inspiring from April to October, when you can hear and feel the resounding rush of water as it cascades directly before collecting into a large pool at the mountain’s base. Please note that during the rainiest months, the hike to the upper falls may be too slippery and hazardous.
